The global energy industry faces mounting pressure to innovate. Energy companies require vetted, field-tested technologies that enhance efficiency, safety, and operational streamlining. Meanwhile, early-stage startups developing breakthrough solutions often struggle to access customers, test environments, and capital. These parallel challenges create a commercialization gap that slows critical energy innovation.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma—a region with deep institutional knowledge and over a century of energy operations experience—one nonprofit is pioneering a solution. Rose Rock Bridge, a Tulsa-based nonprofit, operates as a pilot deployment studio, acting as a bridge between corporations and startups. Unlike traditional accelerator models, its program is designed to fast-track pilot deployments, validate technologies, connect early-stage startups with corporate energy partners, and provide non-dilutive funding to accelerate commercialization.
Launched in late 2022 as an initiative of Tulsa Innovation Labs, Rose Rock Bridge introduces a demand-first approach: the fastest path to commercializing energy technology is to build it alongside the companies that will ultimately use it.
A Demand-First Framework
The program begins by identifying the specific needs of energy companies. Rose Rock Bridge collaborates closely with corporate innovation teams to evaluate demand rather than supply, ensuring solutions align with real business challenges. Leveraging a network of over 40 universities, Fortune 500 companies, and industry leaders—including Devon Energy, HP, ONEOK, and Williams—the program pinpoints pain points in the energy ecosystem and sources emerging solutions.
The focus is not on finding merely innovative ideas, but on technologies that companies can realistically deploy in the near term to address pressing operational challenges. In 2024, the program’s focus areas include:
- Operational agility and integration
- Reservoir and production enhancements
- Fluid systems
- Robotics
De-Risking and Deploying Technologies
Selected startups participate in a six-week accelerator designed to refine their technologies for pilot deployment. Through one-on-one advisory clinics and hands-on workshops, startups collaborate directly with industry partners to assess pilot feasibility and build critical relationships. This collaboration reduces adoption risks for corporations while providing startups with a clear path to market.
At the end of the accelerator, participating startups showcase their solutions to Rose Rock Bridge’s corporate partners. Four startups receive $100,000 each in non-dilutive funding, along with a year of additional support focused on pilot deployment and commercialization. Startups also receive guidance on refining go-to-market strategies, securing follow-on investment, and enhancing visibility through marketing and partnership opportunities.
The Impact
Since its launch, Rose Rock Bridge has made significant strides in accelerating energy innovation:
- Incubated 33 startups
- Supported 16 active or in-development pilot projects
- Invested over $2 million in non-dilutive funding
