With the release date for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book approaching, Nintendo has shared an extended six-minute gameplay trailer, offering a detailed look at the upcoming adventure.

The trailer introduces new elements, including Mr. E, a talking book suffering from amnesia, and a variety of creatures Yoshi must help identify by entering different chapters of the book. The gameplay mechanics remain familiar yet expanded, featuring Yoshi’s signature abilities alongside new features.

Gameplay Mechanics and New Features

Yoshi retains his classic moves, such as using his tongue to grab food and enemies, either spitting them out or swallowing them to create eggs for tossing. He can also perform a ground pound, similar to Mario, to clear obstacles, and use a flutter jump to cross gaps. A new addition, the Tail Flick, allows players to potentially pick up characters to ride on Yoshi’s back.

Creature Identification System

The game introduces an interactive system where players encounter moving creatures within the book. By entering stages to identify them, players can learn about each creature’s behavior and abilities. For example, attacking a creature may stun it, while having it on Yoshi’s back while passing flowers causes them to bloom. Once identified, players can receive name suggestions from Mr. E or name the creature themselves, with additional hints provided for further discoveries.

Release Date and Platform

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is set to launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, 2026.
