Decades ago, two high school students in a computer lab discovered HyperCard, an Apple program that enabled interactive presentations with branching pathways and multiple-choice buttons. They used it to build crude choose-your-own-adventure games when the teacher wasn’t looking. Though HyperCard could have evolved into something much larger, Apple eventually abandoned it. Today, a modern successor is keeping its spirit alive.

Enter Decker, a free desktop app designed to create interactive documents, presentations, and games while embracing a retro aesthetic. Whether you're on a computer or mobile device, Decker makes it easy to craft engaging content without a steep learning curve.

What Is Decker?

Decker is a versatile tool for building:

  • Interactive documents with clickable elements
  • Presentations featuring branching pathways
  • Simple games reminiscent of classic choose-your-own-adventure formats

It’s free to download, with a pay-what-you-can model for those who want to support the developer. A web-based version is also available, requiring no installation.

How to Download and Install Decker

Follow these steps to get started:

Download Options

  • Visit the official Decker download page.
  • Scroll down and click “Download Now”.
  • Choose a payment option to support the developer or select “No thanks, just take me to the downloads”.
  • Select either the mac or win version for download. For other devices, use the web version.

Installation Guide

  • Windows: Extract the ZIP file to any folder and run decker.exe. No installation is required—it’s a portable app.
  • Mac: Extract the ZIP file and move Decker.app to your Applications folder.

Security Note

Decker is safe to use and regularly updated, but it isn’t notarized, which may trigger security warnings on Windows and Mac. To bypass these:

  • Windows: Click “Run Anyway” when prompted.
  • Mac: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, then select “Open Anyway” next to the Decker warning. This only needs to be done once.

Getting Started with Decker

Once installed, you can begin creating content. While Decker includes a “Guided Tour” to showcase its features, here’s a quick way to start:

  1. Open Decker and go to File > New Deck. Click “Discard” to begin with a blank slate.
  2. Under the Tool tab, select “Widgets”.
  3. Choose “New Button” from the Widgets tab.
  4. Double-click the button and enter text, such as “Next Page”.
  5. Click the “Action…” button, select “Next”, then click “OK”.
  6. Go to File > New Card to add a new slide or page.
  7. Repeat the process to build branching pathways or interactive elements.

Decker’s simplicity and retro charm make it an excellent choice for educators, presenters, and hobbyists looking to create dynamic content without complex software.
