Be careful what you wish for. This age-old adage takes center stage in Obsession, Focus Features’ new horror film from writer/director/editor Curry Barker. The movie follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a man who wishes his crush, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), would love him “more than anyone in the whole f–king world.” But when his wish comes true, the consequences are far from romantic.
Inspiration Behind Obsession
Curry Barker drew inspiration from a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons, which featured a monkey’s paw—a nod to W. W. Jacobs’ 1902 short story The Monkey’s Paw. Instead of a primate’s paw, Obsession introduces the “One Wish Willow,” a fictional toy that grants a single wish. But like the monkey’s paw, the wish comes with a horrifying twist.
How the Wish Works in Obsession
Obsession follows the classic monkey’s paw formula: a wish is granted, but with unexpected and terrifying consequences. When Bear wishes for Nikki’s undying love, it manifests literally. Nikki begins expressing intense interest in Bear, staying over at his place and making excuses to be with him. However, she frequently snaps back to reality, confused about her surroundings and actions. These moments of clarity grow fewer as Nikki’s obsession intensifies.
By the film’s third act, Nikki’s love turns violent. She reacts aggressively when a date doesn’t go as planned, stares at Bear while he sleeps, and even duct-tapes their front door shut to prevent him from leaving for work. Her obsession escalates to murder, as she kills their mutual friends Ian (Cooper Tomlinson) and Sarah (Megan Lawless). In a grotesque twist, she also kills and serves Bear’s cat as lunch.
Is Nikki Really Nikki?
Throughout Obsession, Bear notices Nikki interrupting herself—often screaming in terror—before snapping back to her loving persona. In one scene at a party, Nikki suddenly shouts, “It’s not me!” and repeatedly smashes her face in distress. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Bear’s wish has displaced Nikki, leaving a monstrous entity in her place. The film never reveals what happened to Nikki or where she went, but clues suggest her soul may have been consumed by the wish.
In a desperate attempt to undo his wish, Bear calls a customer service number on the One Wish Willow. When he asks if Nikki’s love is real, the representative responds:
“Just because
The line cuts off, leaving Bear—and the audience—in the dark about the true nature of Nikki’s love and the fate of her original self.
Final Thoughts on the Ending
The ending of Obsession leaves viewers questioning whether Nikki’s love was ever genuine or if the wish unleashed something far more sinister. The film’s ambiguous conclusion reinforces the horror of unchecked desire and the dangers of tampering with forces beyond human control.
