AI as a Double-Edged Sword for Password Security
For a company entrusted with safeguarding some of the most critical data in information security, evaluating AI’s risks and benefits can feel less like a calculated decision and more like a high-stakes gamble. A password manager, already tasked with defending customer credentials against external threats and internal carelessness, now faces AI challenges on multiple fronts.
AI accelerates code development and vulnerability detection, but it also enables clients to deploy poorly secured applications that expose passwords. While AI agents promise to execute complex tasks with precision, hallucinations or prompt-injection attacks could lead to errors—just faster and at scale.

Proactive AI Audits to Prevent Self-Inflicted Breaches
1Password’s AI strategy prioritizes preventing enterprise customers from creating security vulnerabilities. The company deploys an on-device agent to audit AI model usage and flag risks for management teams.
For example, the agent may alert a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO):
“Hey, Mrs. CISO, did you know that your developers are using the DeepSeek model on this branch of your code base?”
Wang notes that this scenario has occurred, leading to follow-up security best-practice discussions with the developers involved. DeepSeek, a Chinese-developed large language model (LLM), has faced criticism for its security risks.
Device Health and Password Protection
In addition to AI audits, the agent scans for software updates and other device health indicators. It also identifies unprotected or unencrypted credentials stored on disk, moving them into 1Password’s secure, encrypted vault.
Like other password managers, 1Password encrypts saved credentials end-to-end, ensuring the company cannot access saved passwords. Wang emphasizes that the software is designed to prevent AI agents from viewing plain-text passwords, even during auto-fill processes.
Businesses can also require employees to install 1Password’s Device Trust agent on personal devices, mitigating a common and frequently exploited attack vector. However, compliance remains inconsistent, particularly with family 1Password accounts bundled with business plans that often go unused on employee devices.
Monitoring AI Agents to Prevent Errors and Misuse
AI agents can automate routine tasks, but their non-deterministic nature requires systematic oversight to ensure they remain on task. Wang describes this as a “greenfield opportunity” for 1Password to analyze agent behavior at scale and improve security.
“What was the prompt? What did the agent do with the prompt? Was the output of the prompt?” Wang explains. The resulting log files are fed back into the system as a learning mechanism for both the agent and the model.
1Password Introduces AI Agent Behavior Benchmark
In February, 1Password unveiled the Security Comprehension and Awareness Measure (SCAM) index, a benchmark designed to evaluate AI agent behavior and mitigate risks such as hallucinations and prompt-injection attacks.
