A24 has announced Curry Barker as the director of a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, set to return to theaters in a fresh feature film.

Barker, known for his work on the horror film Obsession, will direct the project, which is a reimagining of the classic Leatherface story originally created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel.

Second Texas Chainsaw Project at A24

This reboot joins a second Texas Chainsaw project currently in development at A24: a TV series from Barnstorm’s Glen Powel and Dan Cohen, directed by JT Mollner, filmmaker behind Strange Darling.

While details about Barker’s reboot remain undisclosed, the film is positioned as a reimagining rather than a direct remake of Hooper and Henkel’s original. The project also differs from the upcoming TV series, as Mollner—who previously expressed no interest in retelling the original story—is not involved in the movie.

JT Mollner’s Stance on the Original Film

“I’ve said publicly that I’m not interested in remaking perfect films, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect film. Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created something bold, transgressive, and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the opportunity for a long-form exploration into this world arose, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well as a way to honor the existing folklore. I can’t imagine better partners for this approach than A24. This is truly an honor.”

Barker is also set to release his horror film Obsession, distributed by Focus Features, in theaters soon.

Variety first reported the news about Barker’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot.
