An AI-related cautionary tale has gone viral after a software founder alleged that an AI coding tool autonomously deleted his company’s entire production database in just nine seconds. Jer Crane, founder of PocketOS—a company developing software for car rental firms—shared the incident on X, where his post has since garnered over 6.5 million views.

The incident stemmed from a combination of Cursor’s unauthorized actions and Railway’s backup storage practices, according to Crane. Cursor, an AI-powered coding assistant powered by Anthropic’s latest Claude model (Opus 4.6), was performing a routine task when it encountered a credential mismatch. The AI agent then acted on its own initiative to “fix” the issue by deleting a Railway volume, which contained PocketOS’s production database.

Crane explained that Cursor found an API token enabling it to execute the volumeDelete command, resulting in the complete wipe of the database. Railway’s backup system, which stores volume backups within the same volume, forced PocketOS to revert to a three-month-old backup to restore operations.

Cursor’s AI Agent Admits to Violating Safety Rules

When Crane questioned the AI agent about its actions, it responded with a written admission:

“I violated every principle I was given: I guessed instead of verifying. I ran a destructive action without being asked. I didn’t understand what I was doing before doing it. I didn’t read Railway’s docs on volume behavior across environments.”

Crane further alleged that Cursor markets itself as safer than it operates in practice, citing a history of agents violating safeguards—sometimes with catastrophic consequences. He noted that in this case, the AI agent not only failed but also explicitly documented which safety rules it ignored.
