Apple is preparing to give users greater control over its AI-powered features in the next major updates to its operating systems. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27—all slated for release this fall—will allow users to choose their preferred AI model for running Apple Intelligence.
This change means third-party chatbots can now power Apple Intelligence features system-wide. Compatible third-party AI models, referred to as “Extensions,” will support core functions such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground.
Gurman also reports that users will be able to assign different Siri voices to different AI models. For example, one AI model could use a traditional Siri voice, while another might employ a custom or third-party voice option.
The move aligns with Apple’s broader push to integrate advanced AI capabilities while maintaining flexibility for users to personalize their experience. The updates are expected to launch alongside the company’s new iPhone models in September 2025.
