Welcome to Behind the Blog, where we share the behind-the-scenes process behind some of our top stories of the week. This week, we’re discussing storage limitations, the role of RSS feeds, and a major reporting project.

Cryptocurrency and the ‘HELLO BOSS’ Investigation

In a previous Behind the Blog segment, I mentioned the difficulties of obtaining cryptocurrency in 2026. Those challenges were directly tied to the article we published this week, titled ‘HELLO BOSS’: Inside the Chinese Realtime Deepfake Software Powering Scams Around the World.

This investigation was months in the making. As detailed in the article, it took weeks—eventually more than a month—to secure the software from sellers and complete our testing process.

Ethical Considerations in Deepfake Reporting

Beyond the logistical hurdles, I also wanted to address the ethical implications of reporting on a story like this. Journalistic ethics are not a one-size-fits-all science; opinions vary widely among professionals regarding techniques and conduct. These are my personal reflections on the matter.
