CBS News has appointed Shayndi Raice, a former Wall Street Journal deputy bureau chief for the Middle East and North Africa, as its new foreign editor. The hiring follows the reported removal of Claire Day, the network’s London bureau chief, amid disputes over coverage of the wars in Gaza and Iran.

In a staff memo released on Wednesday, Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski announced Raice’s appointment, stating she will oversee all international coverage for the network. Raice will report to Wendy Fisher, senior vice president of editorial for CBS News and Stations.

“Shayndi has built a reputation as a stellar journalist and a newsroom leader over the past nearly two decades,” Weiss and Cibrowski wrote in the memo. “CBS News’ audience is eager for coverage of international affairs and wants it to explain why what’s happening very far away affects us here at home.”
“Shayndi is the ideal person to take on this assignment,” they added. “We know her leadership will strengthen our entire news operation. And we can’t wait for her to get started.”

Raice is set to begin her new role on May 11.

Leadership Shakeup in London Bureau

The appointment comes days after reports surfaced that Weiss sought to have Claire Day removed over concerns about the London bureau’s coverage of the wars in Gaza and Iran. According to Status, Weiss, a vocal pro-Israel advocate, reportedly believed Day was overly sympathetic to the Palestinian side and that the bureau’s coverage was so biased against Israel that it “might as well be Hamas.”

Day reportedly pushed back against these views during the network’s daily editorial calls, according to Status. The New York Post also reported clashes between Day and Weiss over coverage priorities. Additionally, Weiss vetoed a plan to send a correspondent into Iran, further escalating tensions.

A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment on the reports.
