The Kansas City Chiefs made a roster adjustment on Wednesday, waiving running back ShunDerrick Powell to open up a spot on their 90-man roster. According to the NFL's daily transaction report, Powell was released without a corresponding addition, freeing the Chiefs to pursue undrafted rookies or other players of interest.
Powell signed a futures contract with the Chiefs in January. He previously went undrafted in 2023 and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles but did not make the team out of training camp.
The Chiefs' running back depth chart currently includes Kenneth Walker, Brashard Smith, Emari Demercado, and fifth-round draft pick Emmett Johnson. Additionally, reports indicate the team plans to sign undrafted running back E.J. Smith, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith.
In another roster move, the Chiefs released an international player exemption for offensive lineman Chukwuebuka Godrick. Godrick played four games and made three starts for the Chiefs last season. His release ensures he will not count against the 90-man roster limit during the offseason.
