Rising operating costs and reduced consumer spending in the wake of an affordability crisis have impacted restaurants across the U.S., and Five Guys Burgers and Fries is no exception. Despite expanding its overall U.S. footprint in recent years, the chain has closed multiple locations in 2026, with additional closures planned for later this year.
According to a review of local media reports, online review platforms, and the Five Guys store locator tool, at least 14 locations have closed or will close in the first half of 2026. The closures have primarily affected California, but locations in Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Georgia, and Nebraska have also shuttered. It remains unclear whether these closures will result in a net decline in the chain’s footprint for 2026.
As a privately held company, Five Guys does not routinely disclose financial details or store counts. However, a franchise disclosure document filed in 2025 and reported by QSR Magazine revealed that Five Guys ended 2024 with a net gain of 37 locations compared to the previous year. The document also noted that the chain closed 14 corporate-owned and 14 franchised restaurants in 2024. According to its website, Five Guys operates over 1,900 locations worldwide.
