Ford Racing has once again redefined electric performance with the unveiling of the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200, a record-breaking all-electric drag racer that combines 2,200 horsepower with groundbreaking lightweight engineering.
The Cobra Jet 2200 is the third all-electric iteration in Ford’s Cobra Jet lineup, following the 1,400-horsepower model introduced in 2021 and the 1,800-horsepower version from 2023. Powered by a pair of electric motors, each producing approximately 1,200 horsepower, the new dragster delivers a staggering output that surpasses even hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista.
Ford has established itself as a leader in all-electric performance vehicles, with previous models including the SuperVan 4.2, F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, and Super Mustang Mach-E. The Cobra Jet 2200 continues this legacy, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in electric drag racing.
Engineering Breakthroughs Behind the Record-Breaking Speed
The Cobra Jet 2200 incorporates several key innovations to achieve its record-setting performance:
- Centrifugal Clutch: Ensures controlled torque delivery at launch for optimal acceleration.
- Two-Speed Transmission: Enhances power delivery and efficiency during high-speed runs.
- Advanced Battery Configuration: Features a primary battery mounted on the undertray, two additional packs at the rear, and a front battery that can be repositioned to optimize weight distribution based on track conditions.
These technological advancements contribute to the dragster’s remarkable power-to-weight ratio. Despite its immense 2,200 horsepower, the Cobra Jet 2200 weighs just 3,325 pounds (1,500 kg)—a reduction of 1,100 pounds (499 kg) compared to the Cobra Jet 1800.
Record-Breaking Performance at NHRA 4-Wide Nationals
Ford Racing put the Cobra Jet 2200 to the test at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, where it delivered sub-7-second quarter-mile runs. The dragster set a new world record for an electric vehicle with a time of 6.87 seconds at 221 mph. In a subsequent run, it further lowered the record to 6.81 seconds, solidifying its dominance in the EV drag racing category.
According to Ford, the combination of its 2,200 horsepower, advanced clutch, two-speed transmission, and lightweight design enables the Cobra Jet 2200 to complete a quarter-mile in just 6.76 seconds, reaching speeds of up to 222 mph.
Ford’s Electric Performance Legacy Continues
The Cobra Jet 2200 exemplifies Ford’s commitment to innovation in electric performance. By leveraging cutting-edge battery technology, lightweight materials, and precision engineering, Ford Racing has created a drag racer that not only sets records but also redefines the future of motorsports.
