For the past two years, the top of Google’s search results page has been dominated by AI Overviews, pushing traditional website links further down. This shift has frustrated many publishers who invested years in optimizing their content for Google search, only to see traffic decline due to the rise of AI-generated answers.

While Google has not explicitly acknowledged fault, the company is now introducing changes to address these concerns. The updates will place more links to external websites within AI Overviews, providing users with direct access to additional sources.

One of the key additions is a new section called "Further Exploration", which will appear at the bottom of AI Overviews. This section will include a bullet-point list of relevant articles and analyses related to the search query. For example, a search for urban green spaces may display links to content about specific projects in cities like New York and Singapore. Additionally, this section may feature bait questions, a common tactic used at the end of AI outputs to encourage further engagement.

Google AI Overviews now includes a 'Further Exploration' section with links to external sources.

Another new feature is the "Expert Advice" section, which will provide snippets of relevant content from across the web. This can include news articles, reviews, forum discussions, and social media posts. Each snippet will include a link to the full conversation, allowing users to dive deeper into the topic.

Google describes these changes as part of its ongoing exploration of how AI can enhance search experiences. The company states that AI Overviews are "just the beginning of exploring a topic you’re interested in," emphasizing its commitment to providing users with more comprehensive and useful information.
