Google’s AI research division, DeepMind, has taken a minority stake in CCP Games, the developer of the massively multiplayer online game EVE Online. The partnership will focus on studying artificial intelligence within complex, dynamic, and player-driven virtual systems.

This collaboration coincides with CCP Games’ announcement that it has spent $120 million to acquire full ownership from its former parent company, South Korean publisher Pearl Abyss (known for Crimson Desert). Following the buyout, CCP Games is rebranding as Fenris Creations and will continue operations without restructuring or layoffs, the company confirmed.

EVE Online as a Living Laboratory for AI Research

In their joint announcement, Fenris Creations and DeepMind described EVE Online as “a uniquely rich environment for study,” particularly for developing AI systems capable of long-horizon planning, memory, and continual learning.

DeepMind will conduct controlled experiments using its AI models in an offline version of the game, running on a local server to avoid disrupting the live player experience. The companies also plan to explore new gameplay innovations made possible by these technologies.
