Google has officially discontinued Project Mariner, an experimental AI-powered assistant designed to automate tasks across the web. The shutdown was confirmed on the project’s landing page, which now displays a message stating:
"Thank you for using Project Mariner. It was shut down on May 4th, 2026 and its technology voyaged to other Google products."
The discontinuation marks the end of a two-year experiment that began with Google’s initial reveal in December 2024. Since then, the tech giant has progressively expanded Project Mariner’s capabilities, including an update that allowed it to perform up to 10 tasks simultaneously.
Over the past year, Google has systematically integrated Project Mariner’s underlying technology into its broader AI ecosystem. Key products benefiting from this transition include Gemini Agent, which now leverages Mariner’s automation framework to execute complex workflows such as data extraction, form filling, and multi-step digital tasks.
The move reflects Google’s broader strategy of consolidating experimental features into more robust, scalable AI solutions. While Project Mariner itself is no longer available as a standalone tool, its core functionalities continue to enhance Google’s existing AI-driven services.
