Instagram has introduced a new standalone app, Instants, designed to compete with Snapchat’s core features. The app was launched in Italy and Spain on June 10, 2024, according to Business Insider.
Instants enables users to share photos that disappear after 24 hours. Unlike permanent posts, these photos can be viewed only once during the 24-hour window, mimicking Snapchat’s ephemeral messaging model.
The app is currently available on both iOS and Android. Meta has not announced plans for a desktop version or additional regional launches, including the United States.
Instants closely resembles the Shots feature previously integrated into Instagram’s direct messaging system. Shots was later rebranded as part of Instagram’s messaging tools but has since been phased out in favor of this standalone app.
Meta’s move reflects its ongoing strategy to expand beyond traditional social media by introducing niche apps tailored to specific user behaviors, such as ephemeral content sharing.
