Longtime Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland retired from the team this offseason after 13 years, and he has pointed to poor play-calling as a primary factor in the Eagles' offensive struggles during his final year with the team.
Stoutland made these remarks while appearing on the Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce podcast, where he discussed the challenges the Eagles' offense faced in 2023. According to Stoutland, the issues stemmed from failing to execute the right play at the right time and avoiding mismatched calls against opposing defenses.
"I think any time things don’t go well, and I don’t want to sound like I’m on an interview, but it’s the truth — it’s execution, it’s calling the right play at the right time, and not running bad plays into bad defenses. I mean, it ain’t that hard — that’s pretty much it."
The Eagles fired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo following the 2023 season. While Stoutland did not mention Patullo by name, his comments have been widely interpreted as a critique of the former coordinator’s play-calling decisions. The frustration extended beyond Stoutland, as Philadelphia fans and analysts also expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s offensive performance last year.
