British racing driver Katherine Legge is set to make history as the first woman to attempt the legendary “Double” in motorsports. On Memorial Day Weekend, Legge will begin her Sunday in Indianapolis by competing in the Indy 500, followed by an immediate transfer to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race.
If successful, she will cover a total of 1,100 racing miles in a single day. To achieve this feat, Legge must complete the Indy 500 without significant delays that could disrupt her travel plans. After the race, she will need to quickly transfer from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to one of two nearby airports, board a private flight to Charlotte, and then take another helicopter to the NASCAR venue—all in time for the driver’s meeting and the start of the Coca-Cola 600.
Legge’s Statement on the Challenge
“Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly. This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourself, taking risks and trying to do something unique. I am so incredibly grateful to e.l.f. for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it.”
e.l.f. Beauty’s Support for Legge’s Historic Attempt
Cosmetics brand e.l.f. is serving as Legge’s primary sponsor for this groundbreaking effort. The company emphasizes its commitment to advancing the message that “when women are given access to spaces traditionally closed to them, anything is possible.”
“At e.l.f., we believe culture moves forward when more women are given the opportunity to own their stories, break barriers and redefine what is possible,” said Patrick O’Keefe, CMO of e.l.f. Beauty. “Katherine attempting ‘The Double’ is a reflection of what empowering legendary females looks like in action—backing women who push boundaries and inspire the next generation to dream even bigger. Together, we are building experiences that invite our community into that journey and remind every eye, lip and face that the road opens wider when women are in the driver’s seat.”
History of The Double in Motorsports
Only five drivers have previously attempted The Double:
- John Andretti (1994)
- Robby Gordon (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004)
- Tony Stewart (1999, 2001) — the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles in a single day
- Kurt Busch (2014)
- Kyle Larson (2024, 2025)
In 1976, Janet Guthrie announced plans to attempt The Double but ultimately failed to qualify for the Indy 500.
