After two weekends at No. 2 behind The Devil Wears Prada 2, Lionsgate/Universal’s Michael has reclaimed the top spot at the domestic box office in its fourth weekend. The Antoine Fuqua-directed biopic, co-produced with Jaafar Jackson, continues its strong run toward becoming the first $1 billion biopic in history.

On its fourth Friday, Michael earned $7 million and is projected to gross between $25–28 million for the weekend, according to Lionsgate. Industry estimates place the total near $27 million, representing a modest weekend-to-weekend decline of just 28%. This performance pushes the film past $280 million domestically and keeps it on track to surpass Oppenheimer’s $330 million domestic and $975 million global total—the current record for highest-grossing biopic of all time.

The Devil Wears Prada 2, now in its third weekend, experienced a sharper 52% drop following Mother’s Day. Despite the decline, Disney and 20th Century’s sequel is expected to add approximately $20 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $177 million. The film remains on course to exceed $200 million domestically and $600 million worldwide.

In third place, newcomer Obsession debuted as the sole new entry in the top five. Focus Features’ horror film, directed by Curry Barker, tells the story of a young man who wishes for his friend to fall in love with him against her will. Opening across 2,815 theaters, Obsession earned $6.8 million on its first day and is projected to gross $14.5 million for the weekend—the strongest opening for Focus since Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale launched with $18 million last September.

Obsession has received near-universal acclaim since its midnight premiere at TIFF last year. Both audience and critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes stand at 95%, and it has earned an A- on CinemaScore—a rare achievement for horror films, joining the ranks of Get Out and Weapons. This strong reception could help the film maintain momentum through Memorial Day weekend, even as it faces competition from A24’s Backrooms later in May.
