Microsoft is rolling out a long-awaited redesign of the Windows 11 Run menu, featuring a modernized interface, improved speed, and native support for dark mode. The update is currently available to Windows 11 Insiders in the new Experimental Channel, marking a significant step toward enhancing user productivity.
In a blog post detailing the changes, Microsoft explained that the redesign was driven by user feedback and performance optimization. One of the most notable adjustments is the removal of the Run menu’s "Browse" button, which historically allowed users to navigate to their files. Microsoft cited "very low usage" of this feature as the reason for its removal.
In place of the "Browse" button, Microsoft introduced a new command: "~\". This shortcut provides direct access to the user’s home directory, streamlining navigation and reducing the number of steps required to locate files. The company stated that this change aligns with its goal of simplifying the user experience while maintaining functionality.
The new Run menu was developed using code from the Command Palette, a utility available through PowerToys—Microsoft’s open-source toolkit for power users. This integration aims to bring consistency and efficiency to the Windows 11 interface, particularly for users who rely on keyboard shortcuts and command-line tools.
The Experimental Channel is designed for Insiders who want to test cutting-edge features before they are released to the broader public. Microsoft has not yet announced a timeline for when these changes will be available in the stable version of Windows 11.
