All of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ veteran players have spent their entire careers under former head coach Mike Tomlin. Now, under new head coach Mike McCarthy, they are adapting to a different coaching philosophy this offseason.

Following Tomlin’s departure after 19 seasons, McCarthy inherited a roster of experienced players. He has been impressed by their response to his new approach, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and adjustment.

Strong Buy-In from Steelers Veterans

McCarthy described the players’ acceptance of his coaching as "excellent."

"The buy-in is excellent. You have to make changes, there's things you're going to adjust, and there's things you're going to emphasize. . . . I think the buy-in has been excellent."

He acknowledged that transitioning to a new system requires adjustments, but the veterans have embraced the changes thus far.

Extended Offseason Program Provides Key Advantage

As a new head coach, McCarthy was granted an early start to the offseason program—two weeks earlier than teams retaining the same head coach from the previous year. He called this additional time invaluable for building relationships and teaching his system.

"I think this is awesome that they give you the extra two weeks."

McCarthy stressed the importance of maximizing this period to instill his coaching methods and evaluate player responses.
