OpenAI is reportedly venturing into hardware with its first product—a smartphone optimized for ChatGPT—rather than a rumored device designed by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive.

According to MacRumors, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared exclusive details about the rumored phone, stating that OpenAI is "fast-tracking" its development. Kuo claims the company aims to begin mass production in early 2027.

Custom MediaTek Chip Powers the Rumored OpenAI Phone

The smartphone will reportedly run on a "customized version of the MediaTek Dimensity 9600", a next-generation processor expected to launch in fall 2025. This chip will succeed the Dimensity 9500, which currently powers flagship devices like the Vivo X300 Pro and Oppo Find X9 Pro.

Key Features: Enhanced HDR and AI Capabilities

Kuo highlighted the custom chip’s image signal processor (ISP) as its standout feature, boasting "enhanced HDR" capabilities. While the full specifications remain undisclosed, this suggests the phone will prioritize advanced imaging and AI-driven photography.

The report did not provide further details on the device’s design, pricing, or additional hardware features. However, the focus on AI integration aligns with OpenAI’s core strengths in large language models and generative AI.

OpenAI has not yet officially confirmed the project. If realized, this would mark the company’s first foray into consumer hardware, expanding beyond its software and AI services.
