Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Premieres July 23 on Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns for its fourth season on Paramount+ on July 23, 2024, marking the start of its penultimate run. The season will consist of 10 episodes, released weekly until September 24, 2024.

This batch of episodes follows the show’s recent renewal for a fifth and final season, which will reportedly premiere in 2025 and include just six episodes.

Trailer Reveals Darker Tone and Fun Surprises

The streamer has released a trailer for Season 4, offering a glimpse of the show’s shift toward a slightly darker tone compared to Season 3, which was criticized for being overly silly and uneven. The trailer is narrated by Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, and features his voiceover discussing the "terror" of space as a planet explodes in the distance.

Despite the darker atmosphere, the trailer also showcases lighter moments, including a screeching alien dinosaur—a fun throwback to the series’ adventurous spirit. Additionally, reports confirm that Season 4 will include a puppet episode in collaboration with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Strong Ties to the Original Star Trek and Kirk’s Return

Season 4 deepens connections to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s. Paul Wesley, known for his role as Captain Kirk, appears prominently in several scenes. One sequence appears to be a direct callback to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, hinting at the show’s reverence for classic lore.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds serves as a prequel to the original series, set several years before Kirk assumes command of the USS Enterprise. The series is expected to conclude with Kirk taking the captain’s chair. Notably, the show maintains an episodic format, avoiding serialized season-long story arcs.

End of an Era for Modern Star Trek

The upcoming seasons mark the end of the modern Star Trek era. After Season 5 of Strange New Worlds, there are currently no new Star Trek series in production—a first in over a decade. Sets are being dismantled, signaling the conclusion of this chapter in Star Trek television history.

Other recent cancellations include the second season of Starfleet Academy, which was gaining critical acclaim. The gap between the final episode of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005 and the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 highlights the uncertainty fans may face in waiting for future projects.

"It's a bummer, even if I didn't always love some of the newer content."

As the modern Star Trek era draws to a close, fans reflect on a decade of new stories, revivals, and evolving interpretations of the franchise’s iconic universe.
