A Suzuki GSX-R1000 sportbike rider suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after crashing into a BMW and becoming lodged on a traffic light pole in Delta, British Columbia. The accident, which occurred on Saturday, left the bike suspended in an unusual position, drawing widespread attention.
According to local police, the rider’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening. The collision occurred when the bike allegedly ramped the BMW’s hood and became caught on the traffic signal pole. Photos of the wreck have since been widely shared across national news outlets in the U.S. and Canada.
The Suzuki GSX-R1000 appears to be a 40th Anniversary model, a variant known for its nearly 200 horsepower output. The bike weighs approximately 448 pounds without a rider. Despite Suzuki’s claims of a high-performance braking system, including a four-piston, twin-disc Brembo Monobloc front brake setup, the rider was unable to avoid the collision.
Surrey resident William Chan told CBC, “Never seen anything like this, like seeing a movie.”
Emergency responders shut down Scott Road between 70th Avenue and 72nd Avenue to clear the scene. Delta firefighters from IAFF Local 1763 successfully retrieved the bike using recovery ropes. The fire crew shared photos of the scene on social media, accompanied by a safety reminder:
“Today also serves as an important reminder to slow down, stay alert, and practice road safety at all times—whether you are driving, riding, cycling, or walking in our community. A moment of caution can make all the difference.”
The fire department emphasized the importance of road safety following the unusual incident.
