From Local Roofing Tool to National Contractor Staple

CompanyCam, a Lincoln, Nebraska-based startup valued at over $1 billion, gained prominence for popularizing a photo-focused construction tracking app widely used in the roofing industry. Its success is evident not only in its valuation but also in the diverse range of users it attracts beyond its original market.

Unexpected Users and Creative Applications

The app’s versatility has led to unconventional use cases across multiple industries. Shipbuilders rely on it to track vessel construction and certify hull strength. Retail merchandisers use it to showcase product setups and monitor subcontractor progress. Property managers oversee buildings through the platform. Even aestheticians have adopted it for "before and after" photos of CoolSculpting procedures, despite terms of service restrictions.

"One thing that has always fascinated me about our business is all of the interesting use cases that we never intended to solve."

The Origins: White Castle Roofing and the Birth of CompanyCam

CompanyCam traces its roots to White Castle Roofing, a family-owned business founded in the 1980s by Luke Hansen’s father. In the mid-2000s, Luke and his brothers, Dane and Jake, took over the company and sought to expand its operations. During this growth phase, they encountered challenges in workplace documentation that inspired the creation of CompanyCam.

Documentation Challenges in the Roofing Industry

The Hansen brothers faced several documentation hurdles in their roofing business:

  • Insurance companies required detailed images of damaged roofs and completed repairs.
  • Homeowners questioned whether crews were damaging property during projects.
  • Managing multiple crews posed difficulties in tracking project completion, material usage, and labor flows.

Photos became central to White Castle Roofing’s processes, reinforcing its motto, "Built by trust, proven by time." By the late 2000s, crews used digital cameras with SD cards to document work, transferring photo cards back to the office after each shift.

The Launch of CompanyCam in 2015

In 2015, Luke Hansen searched for an app to streamline White Castle Roofing’s contracting and recordkeeping needs. Unable to find a suitable option, he partnered with Agilx, a local development studio in Lincoln, to create a custom solution. This collaboration led to the launch of CompanyCam, designed to replace shared drives and Dropbox for project management.

Key Features of CompanyCam

The app introduced several innovative tools for contractors:

  • Photo Annotation: Users can add notes and details to images for clarity.
  • Shared Files and Project Records: Centralized documentation accessible to all team members.
  • In-App Communication: Real-time updates and discussions among workers during projects.
  • Live Feed: Automatically uploads and syncs photos and videos from job sites, allowing managers to track progress in real time.

Early users quickly recognized the app’s potential beyond photo storage. The live feed feature enabled managers to verify project completion and monitor work remotely, transforming CompanyCam into a comprehensive accountability, quality management, and project management tool.

"What started as a better way to put project photos into folders quickly turned into this accountability, quality management, and project management tool."
