Global Tetrahedron, the Chicago-based company behind the satirical news outlet The Onion, has reached a deal to acquire Infowars, according to reports and an announcement by Onion CEO Ben Collins.
Journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre first reported the news. Collins confirmed the deal on Bluesky, stating:
“With the help of the Sandy Hook families, The Onion has reached a long-awaited deal to take over InfoWars.”Collins also revealed that comedian Tim Heidecker will serve as Infowars’ new creative director.
This is The Onion’s second attempt to acquire Infowars. The company previously won a 2024 bankruptcy auction to purchase the site, but a bankruptcy judge voided the results, citing uncertainty over the bid’s value compared to competing offers.
Legal Hurdles Remain
The Onion has secured a deal with Gregory S. Milligan, the bankruptcy receiver overseeing Infowars, to license the website. However, the agreement must still be approved by Judge Maya Guerra Gamble in a Texas district court.
Background: A Decade of Legal Battles
The acquisition follows years of legal disputes stemming from the 2018 defamation lawsuit filed by the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims against Infowars founder Alex Jones. Jones repeatedly claimed on-air that the massacre was a hoax. After failing to participate in discovery, he lost all lawsuits by default in Texas and Connecticut.
Alex Jones’ Response
Jones has indicated he will continue broadcasting regardless of the outcome. Since 2024, he has directed viewers to the Alex Jones Store, which is currently promoting a “last-stand super sale” of Infowars products as a “fundraiser.” Jones has also stated that if Infowars shuts down, he will immediately launch the Alex Jones Network, which currently mirrors Infowars content.
Onion CEO Responds to Inquiry
Ben Collins did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
