I’m Jon, and I’m excited to introduce THE HISTORY OF CHARGING THE MOUND, a brand-new documentary series diving deep into one of baseball’s most dramatic moments: when players charge the mound.
This is the first episode of what promises to be an ongoing exploration. Unlike my previous work, this series has no predetermined endpoint. The stories surrounding mound charges are so bizarre, so hilarious, and so rich with history that I could easily create a hundred episodes. But for now, I’ll keep going until either I lose steam or you do.
Behind the Scenes: A Peek into the Research Process
What makes this series different? For the first time, I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how these episodes come together. That includes sharing my primary research document—a resource I’ve never made public before.
Introducing the Mound-Charging Database
In this post, you’ll find a link to my Mound-Charging Database, a comprehensive Google spreadsheet documenting every mound-charging incident I’ve uncovered between 1950 and 2026. The database also includes my notes, links to video evidence (where available), and other stray observations. It’s a living document, meant to be explored, scrutinized, and even used by anyone interested in baseball history.
Feel free to browse it, analyze it, or take inspiration from it. After all, this database belongs to everyone.
I hope you enjoy this series as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together. Stay tuned for more episodes!
