The San Francisco 49ers were among eight teams without a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, their wait for a selection was brief, as they secured the 33rd overall pick in the second round through a trade with the New York Jets.

The trade, completed before the draft concluded in Pittsburgh on Thursday night, involved the 49ers moving down three spots from their original position at No. 27. This marked the second time the team traded down during the draft process.

At a post-draft press conference, 49ers General Manager John Lynch explained the strategic value of the 33rd pick:

"I think the cool thing about the 33rd pick is that it puts you in a really nice — we can kind of reconvene, reset our board, reset our thoughts — and I think it's also a coveted pick as a lot of teams are doing that themselves."

Lynch added that the 49ers have a clear plan for the pick but acknowledged that teams targeting specific prospects may attempt to delay the selection with trade offers.
