For nearly 12 years, Apple dominated the 5K monitor market—primarily because it offered the only viable options. While LG’s 5K UltraFine was a reliable, if unremarkable, choice, many users opted for the 27-inch iMac from 2014 solely for its 5K screen.

In 2022, Apple addressed demand by launching the $1,599 Studio Display, essentially repackaging the iMac’s 5K display as a standalone monitor with added features like a webcam and speakers. This move also led Apple to discontinue LG’s 5K UltraFine from its retail lineup.

It wasn’t until late 2024 that competitors like BenQ and Asus finally introduced their own 27-inch 5K monitors. While the Studio Display remains one of the best-built and most visually appealing options in its category, its display technology now lags behind newer alternatives.
