Aubrey Plaza opened up about her 18-month relationship with Michael Cera, co-star of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, during a recent episode of the Smartless podcast. The conversation revealed a bizarre scheme the couple once entertained: getting married and divorced in Las Vegas just for the novelty of calling each other ex-spouses.
“We thought that would be a really good bit,” Plaza said on the Monday episode, which also featured hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes.
Cera had previously teased the story in a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, recalling their spontaneous idea to “take a detour and get married” in Sin City simply because it amused them to imagine being 20-year-old divorcees.
When Bateman pressed her for details, Plaza explained why the plan never materialized. The duo made it as far as the courthouse before abandoning the idea. “We got too high and paranoid,” she admitted. “We drove across the country together eating a bag of edibles, and we drove to Vegas with a plan to get married and then get divorced right away so we could call each other our ex-wife and ex-husband forever.”
Plaza also cited Cera’s rising fame at the time as another factor that derailed the impulsive plan. “I think it was a combination of being too high and paranoid, and then at that time, he was just very, very famous,” she said. “Really if you remember, like, when Nick Nora and all that stuff came out, Superbad, he was so recognizable that, like, we went, I feel like we got in line at the county office or something, and then everyone started running and we ran.”
“The fame saved us from tying the knot,” Bateman joked.
“Yeah, it was too — I’m pretty sure that’s how it went down,” Plaza replied. “We bailed.”
Despite the aborted wedding, Plaza made it clear that her feelings for Cera remain positive. “We’re still very good friends, I love him so much. We almost got married,” she said.
Cera, for his part, has maintained his admiration for Plaza. In the 2023 Rolling Stone interview, he praised her dedication and success, saying, “She’s always been so committed to everything that she does. It’s not surprising to me that she’s doing really well. The thing that’s surprising to me is how much she’s producing and putting together projects. It’s amazing. Ingrid Goes West? That was so great.”
During the same Smartless episode, Plaza shared another personal milestone: she is expecting her first child with partner and actor Christopher Abbott. The hosts reacted with excitement to the news, which was recorded before the April 7 People exclusive announcing the pregnancy. Plaza is due to give birth this fall.
The episode was part of her promotion for Prime Video’s animated series Kevin. Listen to the full Smartless episode here.
