What Is Cinco de Mayo? History and Meaning

Cinco de Mayo, or "the fifth of May," commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French army. While often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, it marks a single battle during the Franco-Mexican War (1861–1867).

President Benito Juárez suspended foreign loan payments due to inherited debt. France, Britain, and Spain responded by sending naval forces. Britain and Spain negotiated, but France, under Napoleon III, sought territorial expansion. French troops landed in Veracruz in 1861, forcing Juárez to relocate the government.

The French advanced toward Puebla de Los Angeles, where General Ignacio Zaragoza’s 4,000 troops faced General Charles Latrille de Lorencez’s 6,000 soldiers. Despite the odds, the Mexicans won in a battle lasting from dawn to dusk, suffering around 100 casualties compared to 500 French losses. Though not a war-turning victory, the battle became a symbol of Mexican resistance. The war ended in 1867 when France withdrew completely.
