Xi Jinping Issues Warning on Taiwan to Trump During Beijing Summit

Presidents Xi Jinping of China and Donald Trump of the United States concluded a two-day summit in Beijing on Friday, with the primary objective of stabilizing their nations’ strained relationship. The meetings, which began on Thursday, included closed-door discussions and a final private session between the leaders.

The White House and Chinese state media confirmed that the leaders wrapped up their Thursday meeting after approximately two hours. Trump was scheduled to depart Beijing just after midday on Friday following the final discussions with Xi.

Trade and Economic Cooperation Dominate Summit Agenda

While few breakthroughs were anticipated on contentious issues such as trade, technology, and Taiwan, Trump emphasized the importance of advancing economic cooperation. His priorities included securing deals for China to increase purchases of U.S. agricultural products and passenger planes. To address ongoing trade disputes, the two sides agreed to establish a new board aimed at resolving differences and preventing a recurrence of the trade war that erupted last year following Trump’s tariff increases.

Xi’s Stark Warning on Taiwan’s Impact on U.S.-China Relations

During a closed-door meeting, Xi Jinping issued a pointed warning to Trump regarding the handling of Taiwan. According to China’s official Xinhua News Agency, Xi stated that if Taiwan is managed appropriately, U.S.-China relations “will enjoy overall stability.” However, he cautioned that mishandling the issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts,” jeopardizing the entire bilateral relationship.

Xi’s remarks underscored China’s firm stance on Taiwan, which Beijing considers its sovereign territory despite the island’s self-governance. The warning came amid ongoing tensions, including Trump’s December authorization of an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, a move that has yet to see delivery.

China’s Economic Openness and U.S. Business Engagement

Xi reassured American corporate leaders accompanying Trump that China’s commitment to opening its markets to U.S. businesses would only strengthen. He emphasized that these leaders respect and value China, encouraging them to expand their cooperation with the country. Xinhua reported these remarks as part of China’s efforts to foster a positive business environment for U.S. companies.

Iran War and Regional Stability Take Center Stage

The conflict in Iran also featured prominently in the summit discussions. Prior to the meetings, Trump had hoped China would leverage its influence to persuade Iran to accept U.S. terms for ending the two-month-old war or to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. However, the U.S. president tempered these expectations ahead of the summit, signaling a more cautious approach to the issue.
