Will Smith is set to star in ‘Supermax’, an original action thriller produced for Amazon MGM Studios. The Oscar-winning actor will play Rex, one of two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison.
The film, described as a “propulsive and twist-laden action thriller,” will be directed by David Gordon Green, known for his work across multiple genres, including the recent ‘Halloween’ and ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ franchises.
‘Supermax’ was written by David Weil and David J. Rosen, creators of the TV series ‘Hunters’ and ‘Invasion’. Weil and Rosen will also serve as executive producers, alongside Natalie Weil.
Production is scheduled to begin in late August. While a theatrical release has not been confirmed, the film will stream on Prime Video.
This project marks Smith’s return to major acting roles following the 2022 Oscars incident. His last major film, ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ (2024), grossed over $400 million worldwide.
The film is being produced by Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona of The Picture Company, alongside Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios. Executive producers include Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra, and Spencer Ela of Miramax.
Amazon acquired worldwide rights to the Miramax project, as reported by TheWrap.
