New York Giants edge rusher Brian Burns acknowledged in mid-April that he did not want to play "this season or any other season" without defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. However, the team proceeded with Lawrence's trade to the Cincinnati Bengals shortly afterward.

Despite his initial stance, Burns remains fully engaged in the Giants' preparations for the 2026 season. On Tuesday, he clarified his position, stating he was "just really going to bat for my teammate" and accepting the new reality. This shift positions Burns as the veteran leader of the defense, which he now views as an opportunity to define the unit's identity moving forward.

“That’s how I’m kinda looking at it,’’ Burns said, via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. “It’s kind of a nod to what I’ve done and the success that I’ve had, but I don’t take that lightly at all, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.’’

The defensive transition coincides with broader organizational changes under new head coach John Harbaugh. The hope is that both shifts will contribute to the Giants' first winning season in several years within the NFC East.
