An internal investigation of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department has uncovered evidence that at least 15 high-ranking officials may have participated in manipulating crime statistics to make crime in the city appear lower than it actually was.

According to reports, police supervisors pressured officers to downgrade certain crimes into less serious offenses. For example, thefts were reportedly reclassified as "taking property without a right," a misdemeanor, which significantly altered public crime data by showing false declines in specific crime rates.

The scandal has drawn the attention of federal investigators, Congress, and the D.C. inspector general, all of whom are now reviewing the situation.
