Spencer Fano, the Cleveland Browns’ first-round draft pick at No. 9 overall, expressed relief and excitement after learning he won’t face Myles Garrett in regular-season games during his rookie year.

“One of my first thoughts was, ‘I don’t have to play Myles Garrett on Sundays,’” Fano said Thursday at a press conference following the NFL Draft.

While Fano avoids Garrett in game action, the two will share frequent practice reps, a dynamic the rookie offensive tackle views as a growth opportunity.

“I am so excited,” Fano said. “There’s no better way for me to get better than going against someone like that. Maybe the best player in the world, so to go against him every day is going to be a blessing.”

Garrett, the Browns’ Pro Bowl defensive end, has not participated in the first weeks of the team’s offseason program. However, the most intensive on-field work of the offseason remains ahead, giving Fano time to learn from Garrett before regular-season play begins.
