Dallas Cowboys rookie safety Caleb Downs has the top-selling jersey among all first-year players in the NFL. For fans anticipating his original jersey number, No. 18, the surprise is that Downs has already made the switch to No. 13.
According to Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys’ official website, Downs wore No. 18 during rookie minicamp but will debut No. 13 during organized team activities (OTAs). However, Yarrish cautions that the number is not yet final.
Yarrish noted in a statement that the current number is
"subject to change and still could be different between now and the beginning of the regular season."
Downs previously wore No. 2 during his time at Ohio State. That number is currently assigned to cornerback Cobie Durant, who signed a one-year contract with the Cowboys in March. There are two possible outcomes:
- Downs could negotiate with Durant to reclaim No. 2.
- The Cowboys may exercise their right to reassign the number.
If Downs opts to switch from No. 13 to No. 2, fans should hope it happens before the 2026 season. If Durant does not return in 2027, Downs could make the change later, potentially making any 2026 jerseys with No. 13 obsolete.
