The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is taking a significant step toward reducing animal testing by relocating more than 160 macaques to a sanctuary operated by Born Free USA, a nonprofit organization.

The sanctuary, located in Texas, will provide a permanent home for the monkeys as the CDC phases out their use in research. The agency emphasized the urgent need to find housing for the animals, describing the situation as an "unusual and compelling urgency" in a notice posted on a procurement website managed by the General Services Administration.

A specific timeline for the transfer has not been disclosed. However, the CDC is currently accepting responses to its proposal until May 28.
