The National Football League (NFL) is reportedly planning its draft selections years in advance, potentially aligning them with Super Bowl host announcements. With Super Bowl sites already confirmed through February 2029, the league may award the April 2029 draft around the same time the 2028 draft host is selected, according to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal.

Cincinnati has emerged as the frontrunner to host the 2029 NFL Draft, though league officials have not yet confirmed the decision. The uncertainty stems from whether the NFL is prepared to finalize draft locations so far in advance.

Meanwhile, Minnesota remains the clear favorite to secure hosting rights for the 2028 NFL Draft, with an official announcement expected later this month.

NFL Commissioner Addresses Future Draft Planning

Commissioner Roger Goodell discussed the league’s evolving approach to hosting major events during a recent interview with Pat McAfee. He noted that awarding drafts further in advance has become necessary due to logistical challenges, including stadium capacity, hotel availability, and supporting infrastructure.

“The Super Bowl has gotten to a point where, it’s not the stadium size . . . but also it’s hotel rooms and all the other facilities that are necessary. [Hosting the draft] is slightly easier, but it’s getting more difficult.”

Goodell’s remarks highlight the growing complexity of managing these events, even as the draft presents fewer hurdles than the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LXII Date Delayed Over Season Expansion Talks

The NFL has yet to set a firm date for Super Bowl LXII, originally slated for February 13, 2028, in Atlanta. The delay stems from ongoing negotiations over a potential 18-game regular season, which could take effect as early as 2027.

If the league’s owners do not finalize a date at their next meeting later this month, they will spend the summer lobbying the NFL Players Association to approve the season expansion. The uncertainty surrounding the schedule directly impacts the Super Bowl’s placement in the calendar.
