After more than two decades at CNN and years as an independent producer, journalist-author David Bernknopf found new opportunities in Alaska, where he led an investigative unit and wrote a novel blending humor with serious journalistic themes.
Bernknopf joined former CNN colleague Ed Garsten on Episode 136 of Tales From the Beat, a podcast exploring the automotive and media worlds. Garsten, a veteran reporter and PR specialist, hosted the discussion, which covered Bernknopf’s career, journalism’s evolving landscape, and his experiences in the 49th state.
From CNN to Alaska: A Journalist’s Journey
Bernknopf’s career at CNN spanned over 21 years, culminating in his role as site producer for the United 93 crash coverage in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 2001. He recounted the assignment’s urgency and personal significance:
“One of the assignment editors said, ‘Well, you're from Pittsburgh, right?’ I said, ‘Yeah, that's where I grew up.’ She asked, ‘Do you know where Shanksville is?’ I said, ‘No.’ She said, ‘It's near Somerset.’ I said, ‘I know where Somerset is.’ She said, ‘Get in your car and start driving.’”
Bernknopf spent about a week on-site covering the tragedy. Notably, Garsten’s Detroit-based CNN crew, which had no reporter after layoffs, assisted in the coverage before also facing layoffs post-9/11.
Life After CNN: Investigative Work and Writing in Alaska
Following his CNN tenure, Bernknopf transitioned to independent producing before taking a role leading an investigative unit at a TV operation in Alaska. His experiences there inspired his novel, which merges humor with pressing journalistic issues.
The TTAC Creators Series, which amplifies voices from the automotive and media worlds, featured Bernknopf’s story. The series highlights diverse creators, including those in culture, dealerships, collections, and modified builds.
