Browns QB Competition: Gabriel Takes a Backseat in Early Camp Work
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken outlined the team’s quarterback rotation strategy during the first minicamp practice on Tuesday, emphasizing adaptability. Monken stated that the team structured practices "in a way for us to get a look at all of" Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel, with daily adjustments expected.
On Tuesday, Sanders received the most reps, while both Sanders and Watson worked with the first team. Gabriel did not see first-team snaps, reinforcing the perception that he is not currently in the starting conversation. The competition has largely centered on Sanders and Watson as the primary candidates for the opening-day role.
Gabriel’s 2023 Season: A Short-Lived Stint as Starter
Selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Gabriel took over as the Browns’ starting quarterback in Week 5 following an injury to Joe Flacco. His tenure lasted six weeks before a concussion sidelined him, paving the way for Sanders. Gabriel played only two additional snaps the remainder of the season, a performance that has left many questioning his standing in the current competition.
Gabriel’s Mindset: “Running My Own Race”
Facing questions about his role, Gabriel emphasized a focus on personal improvement. “You know, I think I’m just running my own race and focused on what I can control, and that’s mastering my reps and doing it at a high level,” he told Cleveland.com.
Potential Roster Moves Could Shift the Landscape
The Browns have not ruled out drafting another quarterback this week, which could further complicate Gabriel’s path to the roster. A new addition might limit his opportunities, potentially leading to a change in scenery for Gabriel if he does not secure a role in Cleveland.
