Grammy-winning pop artist Doja Cat recently shared in a TikTok video that she believes she may have lipedema, a chronic condition characterized by abnormal fat accumulation primarily in the lower body. The revelation came as she reflected on her decision to undergo liposuction in 2023.

In the video, Doja Cat described how fat disproportionately built up in her thighs, knees, calves, and hips over time. She candidly remarked,

"If you look at my knees… Like I had big ass knees, like big fat f*ing knees." She added, "Basically, I wasn’t horrendously, deeply overweight or anything. I was just building up all this ass, and ankle, and calves, and knee, and thigh. I had a whole ton of it."

The singer’s openness about her experience has sparked conversations about lipedema, a condition often misunderstood or dismissed as simple weight gain.

What Is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic disorder that causes an abnormal buildup of fat tissue, most commonly in the hips, thighs, and legs. Unlike typical fat, lipedema fat does not respond to standard weight loss methods such as diet or exercise, explained Dr. Raj Dasgupta, chief medical advisor at Garage Gym Reviews.

According to Dasgupta, the condition often presents with the following symptoms:

  • Symmetrical fat accumulation in the lower body
  • Tenderness or pain in affected areas
  • Easy bruising
  • Swelling and a feeling of heaviness in the legs
  • Mobility issues over time

"Although lipedema is not primarily caused by lymphatic issues, the accumulation of abnormal fat can place pressure on the lymphatic vessels," Dasgupta told Healthline. "This compromises the body’s ability to properly circulate and drain lymph fluid, which can result in swelling, tightness, heaviness, and pain, particularly in the legs."

Why Lipedema Is Often Misdiagnosed

Research indicates that lipedema affects 10–11% of adult women, yet it remains widely underdiagnosed. The condition is frequently mistaken for general weight gain or obesity, delaying proper diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Dasgupta emphasized the importance of public figures like Doja Cat sharing their experiences:

"Visibility usually helps people recognize symptoms in themselves and seek medical care earlier. With lipedema, awareness is especially important because the condition is often dismissed as just weight gain. Discussing it publicly can help shift the conversation from blame toward recognition that this is a condition that deserves proper attention."

How Increased Awareness Can Help

Experts believe that greater visibility of lipedema, particularly through high-profile individuals, can lead to earlier diagnosis and better management of the condition. Public discussions help reduce stigma and encourage individuals to seek medical advice rather than attributing symptoms solely to lifestyle factors.

Doja Cat’s openness about her potential lipedema diagnosis has contributed to a growing conversation about the condition, its challenges, and the need for further research and understanding.
