Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik recently addressed the excitement surrounding quarterback Malik Willis during a Tuesday press conference. Slowik opened his remarks by praising Willis' passing ability, stating that he "can spin the ball all over the field."
Slowik later shifted focus to Willis' impact as a runner, a topic revisited later in the session. When asked about the potential stress Willis and running back De'Von Achane could place on opposing defenses, Slowik emphasized the strategic advantage of a mobile quarterback.
"I'd say anytime you have a quarterback who has the ability to run, it's not something that you are going to do down-in, down-out in the NFL; but the threat of it makes it 11 versus 11, as opposed to 11 on 10," Slowik explained, referencing a team transcript. "I think that's what can get tough sometimes when you get a guy that maybe isn't as mobile at quarterback is, they have eleven guys and aside from throwing the ball, you're really playing with ten. So it just lets you equalize some advantageous situations."
Slowik added that quarterback mobility is particularly valuable in off-schedule situations, calling it "definitely a weapon and a threat." He stressed the importance of forcing defenses to account for Willis' running ability, noting that no NFL team can afford to ignore it.
The Dolphins' investment in Willis, including a significant overhaul of their receiver room, suggests they view his rushing ability as a critical asset. How this dynamic plays out will be a key storyline for Miami in the upcoming season.
