The ‘Dutton Ranch’ spinoff is now open for business. Taylor Sheridan’s latest contemporary series, a spin-off of his hit ‘Yellowstone’, follows Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) as they establish a new farm in the fictional South Texas town of Rio Paloma. Their Montana homestead was destroyed in a brushfire, forcing the family to start anew with their adopted teenage son, Carter (Finn Little).

However, their pursuit of peace is soon disrupted by a conflict with the family of a powerful slaughterhouse owner, played by Annette Bening.

Why Rip and Beth Returned

Hauser revealed that discussions about a Rip and Beth-focused spinoff began during the final season of ‘Yellowstone’, which concluded at the end of 2024. The series, once the most-watched show on television, faced an abrupt end due to a public dispute between Sheridan and star Kevin Costner, resulting in Costner’s character being killed off-screen.

About six weeks after the show’s finale, Hauser and Reilly were approached about a “different version of the Beth and Rip story.” Hauser explained their enthusiasm:

“We wanted to know more, because we care deeply about the characters and what that next iteration would be. And so soon after that, they hired a writer, and Kelly and I started talking.”

The idea of relocating the characters from Montana to Texas was proposed, a move Hauser admitted was difficult because “we both love Montana deeply.” Despite the emotional challenge, they committed to the project.

“They slowly walked the dog. We did a lot of listening. And then ultimately made the decision,”
Hauser said.

Preserving the Legacy of ‘Yellowstone’

Luke Grimes, who starred in the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘1883: The Marshall’ for CBS, shared his cautious approach to returning to the franchise.

“Yellowstone is such a beloved property. Even attempting something in the same vein could end in ruin. I think it’s probably healthy to have a little hesitation. We really put everything into ‘Yellowstone.’ These characters are quite beloved, and we wanted to make sure that we weren’t going to make a caricature of something that we cared about, and we wanted to make sure it was done with integrity, and we wanted to maybe learn something new about the characters and take them into a different iteration, that it wasn’t just a continuation, rather, but a new beginning.”

Reilly echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the desire to explore fresh dimensions of the characters and world.

“And I think that’s where Cole and I would have lots of conversations about what we thought that might look like, and what are the things we wanted to explore in the characters in the world, and what was it about ‘Yellowstone’ that we want to bring with us, and what do we want to depart from?”

Hauser added,

“Not that we ever hit a ceiling in Montana, but, as Kelly said, we feel like we completed a really big undertaking. And so then where are you going to put us in? How do we start anew? How is that going to look and what characters are coming into it?”
