WASHINGTON — Marty Makary, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is resigning from his role, according to an administration source with direct knowledge of the decision. Kyle Diamantas, the agency’s top food regulator, will assume the position of acting commissioner.
Makary’s tenure lasted just over one year. Neither the White House nor spokespeople for Makary or Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. responded to requests for comment.
A faction within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had grown dissatisfied with Makary’s leadership and had been exploring avenues to remove him for several months, according to sources cited by STAT.
Speculation about Makary’s potential exit intensified on Friday, following reports in The Wall Street Journal and other outlets that President Donald Trump planned to dismiss him. HHS officials had already begun evaluating potential replacements for Makary, sources familiar with the matter told STAT.
