Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted child sex trafficker, is reportedly receiving special privileges at the low-security Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, where she was transferred after assisting in Donald Trump’s defense.
Noella Turnage, a former employee of the prison, shared Maxwell’s private emails with CNN’s Erin Burnett on Wednesday, detailing the extent of her preferential treatment. In one email to her brother, Maxwell wrote:
The food is legions better, the place is clean, the staff is responsive and polite. I feel like I have dropped through Alice in Wonderlands [sic] looking glass. I am much happier here and, more importantly, safe.
Turnage was fired for leaking Maxwell’s private correspondence. She clarified that she never directly interacted with Maxwell but learned about her treatment solely through these emails. “The things that were being done for her were not common for any of the other inmates, not even the other high-profile inmates,” Turnage stated.
Maxwell’s privileges extended beyond room and board. According to Turnage:
- Prison staff arranged a private visit for Maxwell, which resulted in visitation being suspended for all other inmates that weekend. “They were not able to see their families that Saturday to make way for Maxwell to see her visitors,” she said.
- Maxwell’s mail was personally handled by the warden, a service not afforded to other prisoners. “The other inmates in that prison have a hard time getting out their regular mail, much less anything needed for court filings,” Turnage explained. “For them to go out of their way to ensure Maxwell had that opportunity is pretty disgusting.”
- An inmate at the prison told CNN that Maxwell also receives bottled water and clamshell meals delivered to her room.
Maxwell’s transfer to the minimum-security facility occurred just days after she provided testimony to then–Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche about her former associate Jeffrey Epstein’s relationship with Trump. During the hourslong questioning, Maxwell claimed Trump never witnessed Epstein’s sexual misconduct, despite their well-documented close friendship.
Lawmakers have criticized Maxwell’s new accommodations, describing them as “not suitable for a sex offender.”
