Google has entered into a classified agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, permitting the Pentagon to utilize its artificial intelligence models for 'any lawful government purpose', according to a report by The Information.

The reported deal was announced less than 24 hours after Google employees publicly urged CEO Sundar Pichai to prevent the Pentagon from accessing the company’s AI technology. Employees expressed concerns that the technology could be deployed in ways deemed 'inhumane or extremely harmful'.

If confirmed, this agreement would place Google among a select group of AI developers, including OpenAI and xAI, that have also entered into classified AI partnerships with the U.S. government. Anthropic, another major AI firm, was previously part of this group but was reportedly removed from the Pentagon’s approved vendor list after refusing to comply with demands to modify its AI systems.

The Pentagon has not yet publicly commented on the reported agreement with Google.
