Google today announced a major upgrade to its Gemini for Home service, introducing a ‘continued conversations’ feature that enables more natural, uninterrupted interactions with the AI assistant.
Previously, users had to say ‘Hey Google’ before every follow-up request. With this update, the microphone on smart devices remains active for a few seconds after Gemini responds. During this window, the device’s lights will pulse or glow, signaling that users can continue chatting without needing to re-initiate the conversation.
Gemini is designed to retain context throughout the dialogue, allowing it to deliver faster, more accurate responses without requiring users to repeat key details.
Availability and Setup
The feature is rolling out today for all supported Gemini for Home voice assistant languages and in all supported regions.
To enable continued conversations, users must manually activate the feature in the Google Home app by navigating to the settings menu under ‘Gemini for Home voice assistant’.
Privacy and Contextual Accuracy
Google claims Gemini can distinguish between follow-up questions directed at the chatbot and unrelated conversations in a room. However, given past issues with voice assistants unintentionally eavesdropping, the effectiveness of this feature remains to be seen.
Continued conversation was previously available as an option under the Google Assistant platform, but with more limited functionality. Google has been positioning Gemini for Home as a replacement for the Google Assistant platform since fall 2024.
