Fans of Narnia will need to wait a little longer to experience Greta Gerwig’s fresh take on C.S. Lewis’ classic, The Magician’s Nephew.

The film, written and directed by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker, was originally scheduled to debut in IMAX theaters this Thanksgiving, with a global Netflix release planned for Christmas. However, Warner Bros. has announced updated release dates for the highly anticipated adaptation.

New Release Schedule for ‘The Magician’s Nephew’

The movie will now open in IMAX and wide globally in theaters on February 12, 2027. Sneak previews will begin on IMAX screens on February 10, 2027. The film will then debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.

Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Gerwig’s adaptation features a mix of rising talent and legendary actors, including:

  • Emma Mackey
  • Carey Mulligan
  • Kobna Holdbrook-Smith
  • Daniel Craig
  • Meryl Streep
  • Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell

The original novel, The Magician’s Nephew, was first published on May 2, 1955, marking its 71st anniversary tomorrow.

Gerwig’s Heartfelt Statement on the Adaptation

“Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary and Imax continues to be an incredible partner. I cannot wait for people to see the film in theaters on February 12 and on Netflix on April 2,” said Gerwig in an official statement. “I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life. I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me… It transformed me.”

Industry Impact and Speculation

The delay of Gerwig’s Narnia film has sparked speculation about its potential impact on other major releases. With IMAX screens now freed up, industry observers are wondering if Marvel Studios might accelerate the release of Doomsday to gain an early advantage over Dune: Part Three. Only time will tell whether the delay will influence the competitive release calendar.
